Transparent Exopolymeric Particles (TEP) Selectively Increase Biogenic Silica Dissolution From Fossil Diatoms as Compared to Fresh Diatoms

چکیده
Diatom production is mainly supported by the dissolution of biogenic silica (bSiO2) within the first 200m of the water column. The upper oceanic layer is enriched in dissolved and/or colloidal organic matter, such as exopolymeric polysaccharides (EPS) and transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) excreted by phytoplankton in large amounts, especially at the end of a bloom. In this study we explored for the first time the direct influence of TEP-enriched diatom excretions on bSiO2 dissolution. Twelve dissolution experiments on fresh and fossil diatom frustules were carried out on seawater containing different concentrations of TEP extracted from diatom cultures. Fresh diatom frustules were cleaned from the organic matter by low ash temperature, and fossil diatoms were made from diatomite powder. Results confirm that newly formed bSiO2 dissolved at a faster rate than fossil diatoms due to a lower aluminum (Al) content. Diatom excretions have no effect on the dissolution of the newly formed bSiO2 from Chaetoceros muelleri. Reversely, the diatomite specific dissolution rate constant and solubility of the bSiO2 were positively correlated to TEP concentrations, suggesting that diatom excretion may provide an alternative source of dSi when limitations arise.

Evidence for reduced biogenic silica dissolution rates in diatom aggregates
Because aggregated diatoms sink rapidly through the water column, leaving little time for dissolution, aggregation influences the balance between recycling of biogenic silica (bSiO2) and its sedimentation and preservation at the seafloor. Additionally, aggregation may directly impact dissolution rates of opal. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of aggregation on ...
متن کاملThe role of aggregation for the dissolution of diatom frustules.
Observations that the majority of silica dissolution occurs within the upper 200 m of the ocean, and that sedimentation rates of diatom frustules generally do not decrease significantly with depth, suggested reduced dissolution rates of diatoms embedded within sinking aggregates. To investigate this hypothesis, silica dissolution rates of aggregated diatom cells were compared to those of disper...
متن کاملCarbon content and C:N ratio of transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) produced by bubbling exudates of diatoms
The carbon content of transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) was measured in the laboratory in particles produced by bubbling exudates of the dlaton~ Thalassiosira weissflogij, grown under nitrogen non-limited conditions (N:P = 7). The carbon content of these parhcles ( R P C ) appears to vary as a function of their size according to TEP-C = 0.25 X 10-= r255 (pg C TEP-I), where r is the equiv...

Exopolymeric substances (EPS) isolated from a pure culture of the marine bacterium Marinobacter sp. and the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum (axenic) were partially purified, chemically characterized and used as dissolved organic matter (DOM) for the production of macroaggregates. The role of organic particles such as transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) and Coomassie stained particles (C...
متن کاملEffects of biogenic silica dissolution on silicon cycling and export production
[1] Biogenic silica (bSiO2) dissolution plays an important role in the marine silicon cycle, diatom production and vertical export production. An ocean ecosystem model that incorporates dependency of bSiO2 dissolution on water temperature was used to examine the effects of bSiO2 dissolution on diatom production and bSiO2 export. Diatoms dominate with higher bSiO2 dissolution rates because of en...
